Masimba Musodza - novelist.
Stitching Broken Pieces and Silencing The Past is both a harrowing and enlightening read. It is the personal testimony of Nomamvula, a veteran of Zimbabwe’s struggle for independence, and thus a testimony of that era in the face of the sanitized “official history” that has been written by those of her peers who assumed power. Apart from the political history, Stitching Broken Pieces and Silencing the Past reads like a modern saga, like Alex Haley’s Roots. I believe that it will have a profound an impact on Zimbabwe’s collective sense of history and identity as Roots had on African Americans. Through the journey of the Gabadela/Ndawana brothers, sons of a KhoiSan woman and a European settler, and those of their many descendants, the social and economic history of indigenous Zimbabweans is explored. So too is an evil that persists in our society, as does the culture of shame and silence around it. –

I’ve had the opportunity to read through your manuscript, and I must say, it is truly compelling and immersive work. The depth of your storytelling and the way you weave personal experience, historical context, and cultural memory is remarkable. Your ability to bring both your voice and that of your ancestors to life creates a rich, multi-layered narrative that pulls the reader in and holds their attention throughout. The scenes are vivid, from the untamed African landscapes to the intimate details of daily life and survival, and your descriptions convey both beauty and intensity in equal measure.
Your strength lies in your authenticity and emotional resonance. The rawness of your experiences, particularly your exploration of identity, resilience, and motherhood, is conveyed with courage and sensitivity. The way you capture your ancestors’ presence alongside your own reflections adds a unique and powerful dimension to the narrative. I can genuinely see the dedication and care you have put into preserving both history and personal truth.
Overall, this manuscript is a remarkable achievement. Your voice is distinctive, your story is deeply human, and the cultural and historical layers you explore are profoundly moving. It is a work that will resonate with readers and leave a lasting impression. Thank you for sharing this with me; it is an honor to read it. I look forward to seeing how this story continues to evolve and touch its audience.
